How the fire suppression system works

The Dafo Vehicle system consists of four integrated elements that work together in a coordinated, fast and efficient way to suppress fires.

1

Detection

A linear heat detector wire with a fixed activation temperature of 180 °C. When reached, the alarm signal punctures the burst disc of the propellant gas cartridge, releasing nitrogen into the agent container.

2

Alarm

An alarm horn in the vehicle and a light signal in the panel immediately warn the driver.

3

Suppression

Forrex liquid is distributed through the pipe system to the nozzles. It pushes away oxygen, cools overheated engine parts, impregnates burning material, sticks to surfaces and prevents re-ignition. Non-corrosive and environmentally friendly.

4

Control

The control unit has a real-time clock and event log giving access to historical data, making it possible to analyse previous events.

CNC Machines

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines are frequently used in many industries – and those handling metal materials pose significant fire risks.

Fire risks in CNC machines

Turning machines and milling cutters have several potential risk factors inside the processing space. If there is a problem with the cutting tools, or the machine feeds material at too high a speed, the process space can overheat. Small metal chips and flammable materials such as titanium are other high-risk factors. The coolant liquid used to lubricate and lower temperatures is flammable and can easily be ignited.

Why protect them?

No regulations require fire suppression systems for CNC machines, but a fire can be costly in many aspects. Investing in a fire protection system that effectively detects and suppresses any fire is the best way to protect the machine's surroundings and minimize downtime.

Electric Vehicles

Fire detection and suppression for electric and hybrid vehicles (EV and HEV). As more electric vehicles become operational, their involvement in fire incidents will likely rise.

Fire risks

The fire risks of vehicles powered by batteries and high-power electric devices are not widely understood. A malfunctioning Li-ion battery can result in thermal runaway with rapid fire and heat propagation and emission of toxic gases. Electric vehicles have more electrical components, wiring and higher power running through the system – and the Li-ion battery adds a whole new risk element.

Challenging risks with Li-ion batteries

When Li-ion batteries fail through short-circuiting, overcharging, high temperatures, mechanical damage or overheating, thermal runaway might occur – the battery generates more heat than it can dissipate, and the process becomes self-sustaining.

As the heat source and fuel both exist within the battery, these fires develop quickly. Released flammable electrolytes make extinguishing very difficult, and toxic gases such as hydrogen fluoride are emitted.

Safe EV™ solution

Through multiple international research projects, Dafo Vehicle has developed the Safe EV™ fire protection solution. The suppression agent Forrex™ provides cooling capacity to slow fire development and allow safe evacuation of passengers.

Depending on the protection level needed, the early warning detection can be applied outside the battery packs or as an integrated part – or limited to detection only.

The protective zones

The main risk scenarios are divided into four protection zones, each protected by robust detection and suppression systems (liquid- and gas-based):

  • Zone 1 – Engine compartment
  • Zone 2 – Electrical hazards
  • Zone 3 – Traditional hazards
  • Zone 4 – Batteries

The system detects potential battery failure at the earliest possible stage and takes immediate action by cooling with Forrex™ – stopping or delaying a hazardous situation before the fire develops further.

Energy Storage Protection

Advanced fire protection for energy storage systems – safeguarding your energy assets and ensuring safety, reliability and efficiency.

Why store Li-ion batteries safely?

Energy storage is vital to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores electric charge in specially designed batteries for later use. Li-ion batteries are rapidly replacing lead-acid batteries in stationary storage thanks to higher capacity and better charge/discharge performance.

They are usually very reliable, but in case of failure the consequences for the installation and surroundings can be severe.

Early warning detection

When Li-ion cells fail, thermal runaway can occur and the electrolyte catches fire. Dafo Vehicle has developed a high-sensitivity plug-and-play sensor solution for battery storage containers that raises an alarm in the venting phase – before the battery goes into thermal runaway.

  • Coded cabling – each component has its place
  • CO sensors pre-programmed at 50 ppm for alarm
  • Handles four sensors simultaneously
  • On alarm: SMS to the user plus alarm siren/strobe lights

Uses light-scatter technology to detect a wide range of fires, including those producing black smoke. Its optical design measures both back- and forward-scattered light. Advanced algorithms reduce false alarms from non-fire sources such as smoking materials.

Optical/Heat Multisensor Detector

A dual-sensor design combining smoke and heat detection – highly effective for general use and for fast-burning flaming fires, including liquid fires. Certified to meet essential EMC Directive requirements.
